Ancient Baubles
Chalcedony was the name of an ancient seaport and was a beloved gemstone of the ancient world. In the third or fourth century, Greek sailors wore chalcedony to prevent drowning. The stone was and is prized for carving amulets, cameos, and intaglios. It occurs in a variety of translucent tones and colors. Varieties of chalcedony include agate, jaspers, onyx, and carnelian, to name a few. Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline form of silica, and is composed of microscopic intergrowths of the mineral quartz.
