Peridot is the national jewel of Egypt. For over 3,500 years, peridot was mined on the island of Zabargad in the Red Sea. Many jewelry historians believe the emeralds worn by cleopatra were actually peridot. The distinctive lime green color of peridot is treasured in Hawaii and thought to be the tears of the goddess Pele.
